Artemisia Annua and cancer.

In February 2015, the National Cancer Institute of Milan expressed its opinion on Artemisia Annua as a cure against cancer, referring to Artemisia Annua and its artemisinin content.

The National Cancer Institute of Milan has confirmed that artemisinin and its derivatives in vitro experiments have shown a toxic effect on cancer cells and that drugs containing these active ingredients are used as a treatment for malaria.

The artemisinin molecule, produced in the Artemisia annua plant, is currently recommended by the WHO to combat malaria in ACT (Artemisinin Combination Therapy) format. In addition, in recent years the enormous potential of this molecule, and derivatives, has been discovered to combat other diseases, such as cancer, autoimmune, inflammatory or parasitic diseases.

Artemisia Annua and Covid-19

Due to the growing interest of this plant as a possible treatment against COVID-19 or as a complementary treatment combining them with other treatments; Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina announced the creation of Covid-Organics, an herbal drink based on Artemisia annua, to prevent and cure COVID-19. As a consequence, the World Health Organization (WHO), in a recent communiqué of May 4, did not reject the use of this medicinal plant as a prevention and cure treatment for COVID-19, but it did ask that they be done before clinical trials proving its effectiveness. The WHO added that "medicinal plants such as Artemisia annua are being considered as possible treatments against COVID-19 and their efficacy and side effects should be examined." In fact, the WHO supports scientifically proven traditional medicine and promotes activity in research centers to select natural medicinal products.
